Shooting Pics of an event..A Plan That Might Work For You....

by Dave Kallaway

If you shoot pictures of events...this might be the photography huddle for you today. I've shot many events for years..concerts, weddings, radio station events, live TV shows, expos, and community gatherings..and through all of them..I created a template for covering them. First..I cover them like I'm shooting for a magazine. So that requires getting certain shots that shows whoever sees the pictures "Oh..so that's what the event looked like." Sometimes that's done in one picture...sometimes 10, sometimes 20. But most of them time..it's a very short list of photos. Signs, People, Action, Crowds, Special parts of the event..I make out a list of all the shots I need. And it happens all the time..the one picture that YOU never think is THE SHOT...ends up being the shot that most people love..like this one of the band "Hip Pocket"...they sounded great..but I took this pic real quick..didn't think about it too much when it came to editing all the photos..but I threw it up on Facebook along with all the ones I worked on composing right, getting good light, getting action, crowd shots...and this is the one that most have commented on and like. Go figure. But bottom line..if you shoot events..have a plan..work the plan..take more shots than you need..narrow down to the ones that tell the story...
