The Green Bay Packers decided to not wait until the end of this lost season to make a coaching change. Mark Murphy had seen enough after the desultory showing this past Sunday and the snow hadnt even melted off his hat before Mike McCarthy was shown the door after 12 plus seasons. Let's be clear, I believe the time had come to make a change. But to say the struggles of the Packers the last two seasons should be laid completely as the feet of McCarthy is wrong. This roster is a mess…and the plethora of injuries showed the depth of this team is non-existant. Aaron Rodgers is not playing like the highest paid player in football. He's barely playing like a journeyman this season. And now word came out yesterday that he changed McCarthy's playcalls at the line of scrimmage on a regular basis this season. Mike McCarthy seemed to be stubborn guy. He wasnt particularly good at late game clock management. And he, like many other coaches treated the media with a cross between disdain and forced tolerance. But he knew the score. Very few coaches in any sports get to go out on their own terms. I sensed when I talked with him last Thursday that he knew this was coming…maybe not this quick…but certainly at the end of the season. Aaron Rodgers said yesterday he wasnt particularly interested in a re-build….no kidding, he turned 35 on Sunday. But this team isn't poised to be a contender regardless of who the new coach will be. At the beginning of the season I looked at their schedule and thought a big year was in the offing. It was fools gold. This team was a paper tiger that ripped and disintegrated at the first sign of stress. Was some of that McCarthy's fault? Sure it was…and it's always easier to fire the coach than do the other things that thes kinds of struggles demand.
The Badger mens basketball team is off to their best start since 2014 and vaulted 10 spots to 12th in the latest poll. They are 8-1 after beating Rutgers last night. Marquette is pretty good too…should be an interesting matchup at Fiserv Forum on Saturday
Ken Berry passed away over the weekend. F-Troop was stupid but sometimes humorous.
Things that should annoy you today….the blatant and shameless power grab going on down in Madison this week is completely outrageous. After losing every state-wide race in the last election Republican weasals like Robin Vos and Scott Fitzgerald are engineering legislation that would weaken both the new Governor an the new attorney general. All you have to do is ask them how they would feel if a Democratic legislature would try and do this to a Republican governor. As Rep Katrina Shankland put it…”You guys are just going crazy here, it's like Gremlins past midnight”.The gerry-mandering of districts that Republicans have done will make it pretty difficult for the Dems to win back the Assembly (I live on the northeast side of the Wausau area and my rep lives in Marshfield) but when it happens I want to hear no complaining from these hypocritical a**holes.
A prison in New Mexico is threatening to shut down due to a lack of prisoners. You would think that would be a good thing…but this is a private prison and they are demanding that the judicial system keep those 300 beds filled and keep their profits flowing. The end result of privatizing something that should not be a for-profit industry.
In remembering George HW Bush, Dick Cheney was asked what the best attribute Bush 1 passed along to his son George W. Cheney answered “They hired me”…cementing his place as one of the biggest assholes in American history
