CBS announcer Jim Nantz called out Tiger Woods on Monday. Nantz belied his low-key reputation on the Mike Francesa radio show on WFAN in New York by suggesting that Woods outburst within earshot of a live microphone during the Masters was uncalled for and suggested that his recent pledge to clean up his on-course demeanor was nothing but empty words. Nantz also suggested that if he would have uttered the words that Woods did, he would have been fired. I suggest there is a difference between a competitor and a reporter and the fact that there is a double standard over what they can say shouldnt be a surprise. Anyone who can read lips, especially in this day of High Def TV has realized that the language of our games is pretty coarse. Anyone who has spent any time in a locker room knows that the language of sports includes profanity used not in a disparaging way in many case, but as a part of regular conversation. If TV doesnt want to air the heat-of-the-moment profanity that pops up..they should mute the microphones that are nearest the competitors. This high-falutin idea that golf should be different or more genteel than the other sports is nice but not really fair to the players who are as self-critical as Woods when it comes to their performance. That I'm not allowed to swear on my broadcasts while the players can doesnt bother me a whit and I suggest that Nantz should get off his high horse and worry about something important.
The NHL Stanley Cup playoffs begin tonight. In no other sport is there such a difference between the regular season and the playoffs. I suggest if you have only experienced regular season hockey and don't know what the fuss is...get involved in the playoffs and embrace the excitement.
The Brewers and Cubs return to action this afternoon....Dave Bush vs Randy Wells on WSAU...pregame at 12:45.
The Wisconsin Valley Conference Baseball race began on Tuesday and it looks like it might be more interesting than last year. Wausau West ran away with the conference in 2009 but they graduated a bunch and last night blew a late lead in losing to Marshfield. Rapids beat East and in a non-conference game Merrill beat SPASH for the first time in five years.
Songs Of The Day (from My I-pod)
Family Affair-Sly & The Family Stone (1971) this was mostly Sly along with sister Rose..from the influential Lp "There's a Riot Goin On". It went to Number 1
Fantasy-Earth, Wind & Fire (1978) featuring the falsetto of Philip Bailey (dig the shiny suit) EWF usually delivered the goods. Don't get metioned alot in a "top bands" conversation but should.
