There is an on-going debate in some high school sports circles as to what is better...winning a tournament game or two...or taking home a conference title. Both have their charms. Obviously winning a tournament game keeps your season alive. No athlete wants their season to come to an end but let's face it...only one team wins their final game of the year. A Conference title on the other hand shows that a team has been consistent and good over an extended period of time. The Wausau East Lumberjack girls volleyball team took home the Wisconsin Valley Conference title on Thursday night at the East gym with a hard-fought victory over Wausau West. It's the first outright title for East since 1996 and it didnt come easy. West won the first two games of the match before the Lumberjacks re-bounded. Con grats to Coach Ken Zoromski and his girls. He said they would never forget last night and he's right... a conference title is very special and they did it on Volley for The Cure night in which a bunch of money was raised for breast cancer research.
Wausau Newman and Stevens Point earned football playoff sports last night with wins. More good matchups tonight including Merrill at Wausau West.
Aaron Rodgers returned to practice yesterday but it's still not clear if he can play on Sunday. He said the memroy test he had to take to get back on the practice field would have been tough even if he hadnt suffered the concussion.
The Pointer basketball teams are getting some love in the pre-season polls. the Pointer men are ranked #1 after winning the D-3 title last season. UWSP was 29-4 and returns most of their team....The Pointer women are ranked #8. They return 4 starters and 11 players from a 24-7 team that went to the elite eight.
The major league baseball cahmpionship series get under way. Texas hosting New York tonight while SF plays at Philly on Saturday. The hitters in that Giant-Phillie series have to be shaking their heads at the ridiculous pitching they will have to face. I think it's Texas-Philly in the World Series.
You can still join us for Disco Cures Cancer Tonight at Dale's Weston Lanes. Tickets will be available at the door. Songs of The day (from My-i-pod)
Good Times-Chic (1979) one of the great bass lines of all time and sampled by a bunch of other artists including the SugarHill gang who used it for the backing track on arguably the first"rap" hit Rappers Delight.
Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues-Danny O'Keefe (1972) an underrated singer-songwriter from the seventies had his only big hit with this one.
