The quest for a trip to the football finals at Camp Randall began yesterday as high school teams around the state had their first workouts. It's only an eight game regular season this year and some are teams face a very tough start to their season. DC Everest has a major challenge as they travel to traditional rival Marshfield to open the season on August 24th before also facing Appleton North and Kimberly the following two weeks. Wausau West opens on the road at Stevens Point.
I'll be bringing you Wausau East games for the 17th season and 2nd year coach Steve Jung will try and build on the Lumberjacks fine season a year ago that saw them return to the playoffs. I'm told that East will be running a spread offense and throwing the football which makes sense since thay have a number of offensive weapons and if Jung can have a defense and special teams that played as well as last year it should be fun to watch. Also East has an attractive travel schedule as they will only have to leave the metro area twice.
Also, with Pat Snyder leaving the radio business to run for the State Assembly, Chris Conley will become the new voice of the DC Everest Evergreens. We will once again have football doubleheaders for you on Friday nights on Foxsports1390. Usually the away game will be live and the home game will be on tape delay.
The Brewers have really found something in Mike Fiers. He took a perfect game into the seventh last night as Milwaukee beat the Reds 3-1. As he makes his second start against some of these teams it will be interesting to see his adjustments but he seems to have shown the Brewers that he can be a big part of next years rotation. Also another young pitcher will get a look see the next two months. Rookie Jim Henderson pitched the ninth last night and picked up his first save.
The Badger basketball team team got a verbal commitment from a California player currently attending a prep school in New Hampshire. Jordan Hill is a 6'3" guard from Pasadena and will be part of the 2013-14 class.
Songs of The Day (from my I-pod)
Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)-Kenny Rogers & New Edition (1968) a Micky Newbury song rejected by Jerry Lee Lewis but a big hit for Rogers. Its supposed to be an anti-LSD song and certainly fit into the 68' vibe. The guitar solo was played by Glen Campbell!
Just Like A Woman-Bob Dylan (1966) a classic from "Blonde On Blonde"..written either about his relationship with Edie Sedgewick or Joan Baez..but who cares...it's a beautiful lyric...here is the performance of the song at the Concert For Bangla-Desh where Bob is in pretty good voice.
