Enjoy a Golden Era

Monday February 6, 2012 Posted 3 months, 2 weeks ago by Tom King

The Golden Era I'm referring to is quarterbacks in the NFL. Two, of course displayed their talents yesterday in the Super Bowl. Tom Brady, despite the loss has to be on the short list of the "best" of alltime...and Eli Manning is on his way. 5 years ago we would never even have dreamed that at this point we would be talking about Eli possibly having a better career than Peyton...but it is very possible now. Along with Brady & Manning...you have Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Matt Stafford, Ben Rothlisberger...along with hot newcomers like Cam Newton &  Andy Dalton plus Andrew Luck coming....that's not even counting Peyton Manning who certainly is on his way to the Hall-Of-Fame. Sometimes we get so caught up in the moment that we don't realize what we are witnessing. With the rules of the game the way they are and the talent levels of the quarterbacks continuing to rise...this is a "golden era" that may last for awhile...enjoy it while it's happening.

We though the Giants recievers vs the Patriots secondary would be a key facet of the game and they sure were. Nicks, Cruz, Manningham and the tight ends came up big.

Aaron Rodgers certainly looked smooth on the pregame show. He has a future in broadcasting if he wants it....hopefully not for a long time.

I thought the commercials were a mixed bag....the promo for "The Voice" with Betty White was pretty good......Elton John intoning "No Pepsi for You" made me chuckle ..and it will be hard telling some of the car commercials apart (not what you want to hear if you're the company shelling out the big bucks).

Madonna was fine at halftime...although the sound mix of her voice was pretty muddy at times...she lipped synced well enough and the show was certainly more visually interesting than musically.

Other notes from the weekend

The Bucks and Badger basketball teams stumbled. Milwaukee can't lose games to teams like Detroit if they want to be a playoff team. The loss of Bogut really showed up Saturday night as the Bulls carved them up inside.

Good for Kyle Stanley. He's the golfer who had a 3 shot lead last week and got an eight on the last hole and lost...well he came back from an eight stroke deficit this week and won the tournament in Phoenix. From the outhouse to the penthouse in seven days.

The high school hockey seedings are out for the tournament. First round games on  include

Rhinelander at Wausau East

Merrill at Mosinee

Tomahawk at Lakeland

Antigo at Stevens Point Pacelli

Medford at Altonna

Marshfield at Chequamegon

Wausau West, DC Everest, Stevens Point & Northland Pines and Wisconsin Rapids get byes in the first round. The tournament begins on Feb 14th.

In girls hockey the CW Storm will host Lakeland on Feb 16th and Medford will play at Marshfield. On the 16th it will be Tomahawk at Northland Pines and Rhinelander/Antigo at Point/Rapids.

Songs of The Day  (from my I-pod)

If I Were A Carpenter-Bobby Darin (1966) Tim Hardin wrote it but Darin had the big hit with it.

If It Doesnt Come Naturaally, Leave It-Al Stewart (1976) a cut from Year Of The Cat featuring the great guitar work of Peter White and Tim Renwick.
