Finally!

Of course, its mostly about the money...almost everything in big time college sports is...but a 4 team football playoff accepted by the College Presidents committee yesterday is certainly the right step forward. Is it a complete step? No. That would be a full playoff system that would encompass most of the deserving teams each year.

The first championship game is set for Jan 12 2015. The playoff system would use the four major bowls as semi-final games on a rotating basis. The commitee tasked with determing the finalists will use win-loss record, strentgh of schedule, head -to-head results and whether a team is a conference champion. 125 schools are playing at the highest level this season.

John Axford blows another one. One pitch up in the zone and there goes your ballgame. It's a fine line between success and failure at the major league level and I'm amused by some Brewer fans who are savaging Doug Melvin, Ron Roenicke and the players over their struggles this year. As if success is a given every year and by benching everyone who is struggling or trading away underperfoming players will solve all of a teams problems. How bout the fact that almost every team (yes even the small market ones) have a chance to compete. Players get hot...players get cold....players get hurt...the ball bounces funny. That's what makes baseball such a great game....even the stat heads can't predict what's going to happen. The LA Dodgers, Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals are all examples of that this year. Is Ron Roenicke the problem with the Brewers?...hardly...the manager has less control over the success of a team than you think. It comes down mostly to player performance, health & luck. And this year, Milwaukee has been lacking in all three.

The Wausau Legion Post 10 Bulldogs broke out of their offensive slump on Tuesday night...banging out 18 hits in 15-2 win over Merrill. The team got back to .500 at 8-8 overall and are now 3-1 in the Valley Legion League. They will be in Stevens Point Thursday thru Sunday for the annual Ed Kardach Firecracker Classic. Songs of The Day   (from my I-pod)

It would have been songwriter Doc Pomus's birthday today...how about a couple of Doc Pomus classics

Lonely Avenue-Ray Charles (1956) one of Doc's first hits

Save The Last Dance For Me-Drifters (1960) sung by the great Ben E. King. Doc reportedly wrote this classic after his wedding. See, Doc had polio and couldnt dance...he wrote it for his new bride who was dancing with the other guests
