If it's late February that must mean the Wausau West Warrior and Central Wisconsin Storm hockey teams are headed for the State Tournament in Madison. It's been a sustained run of success for the Warriors as they won the State title two years ago and finished 2nd last year. West earned the trip with an impressive 5-3 win over Stevens Point on Saturday. They will face Verona on Thursday in a quarterfinal matchup. Defending champ Green Bay Notre Dame is the favorite this week. They dismantled Appleton 11-0 to get back to Madison. Wisconsin Rapids has the unenviable task of trying to slow them down on Thursday. the other games have Eau Claire Memorial vs Whiefish Bay and Superior vs Fond du Lac.
The Storm will try and defend their title as they face Onalaska in a firdt round game. The toehr matchup features Hayward-Spooner vs University School who upset top seed Brookfield Central to earn the trip.
Also congrats to the five wrestlers from our area that took home gold on Saturday. Colin Baine of Wausau West became the first two-time state champion in school history and finshed his individual career at 54-0. He will wrestle for West this weekend in the State team championships.Luke Nowak of Edgar also won for the second straigh year. The other state champs were Tyler Schmidt of Merrill and Matt Nowak & Devin Lemanski of Edgar.
Congrats to the Pointer womens' basketball team as they win their sixth straight WIAC conference title with a 76-71 overtime win over Whitewater on Sunday. DC Everest grad Sam Barber tied a career high with 34 points. They now get an automatic bid to the NCAA D-3 tournament. Those pairings will be announced today as well as the men's D-3 tournament. The UWSP men are hoping for an at-large berth after being upset in the conference tournament last week.
