A Busy Week Despite The Holiday

by Tom King

The sports world doesnt take time off for the holidays...it just keeps moving...one season leading into the next...no off-seasons to speak of anymore. And this week is no exception. College bowl football games...conference seasons begins in college hoops...pro football playoffs...NBA & NHL seasons continue...and this year we have the Winter Olympics to look forward to in a little over a month. And...it's less than two months until pitchers & catchers report. :-)

The Badger football team is a 1 1/2 point favorite in Wednesday's Capital One Bowl. This has pissed South Carolina off and they will come in with a big chip on their shoulders. Expect a big dose of James White and Melvin Gordon early in this one. you can hear the game on WSAU...pre game at 10AM.

The Badger mens basketball team is still ranked 4th in the latest AP poll and has moved up to 5th in the coaches poll. They are off to their best start in 100 years and face Northwestern Thursday in the Big Ten opener.

Marquette begins play in the newly reformed Big East Conference tonight against Creighton. Don't even bother to worry about why teams from Omaha and Milwaukee are in a conference called the Big East...you'll just drive yourself batty.

The Pointer mens basketball team stayed unbeaten over the weekend with a couple of wins in Las Vegas. They also got a nice write-up in the Las Vegas Journal newspaper as they continue to be the flagship D-3 program in the country.

The Pointer women are in Atlanta and they beat Rust College yesterday.

The Bucks begin a western trip tonight in LA against the struggling Lakers. Of course the Bucks are struggling too and now will miss John Henson for a couple of weeks with a high ankle sprain. It's too bad because he was having a breakout season. You can hear the Bucks and lakers tonight on Foxsports Radio AM1390 & FM 93.9.

The Packers host San Francisco on Sunday at Lambeau and they have to be feeling like they are playing with the house's money after coming back from the dead three weeks ago and making the playoffs. The 49ers have beaten Green Bay three times in the last 12 months but that means nothing on Sunday. What does mean something is that they have been playing very well recently.

Hope you have a Happy & Safe New Years Eve and enjoy the games this week!

Songs of The day  (from my I-pod)

Midnight Cruiser-Steely Dan (1972) a track from their fist album "Cant Buy A Thrill"...sung by drummer Jim Hodder and  with a nice guitar solo from Jeff "Skunk" Baxter

Might As Well Have A Good Time-Crosby, Stills & Nash (1982) from the "Daylight Again" LP which was originally supposed to be a Stills-Nash project as Crosby was in rough shape from extensive drug use. He cleaned up enough to record a few songs for the album including this beauty from their keyboard player Craig Doerge with lyrics by folk singer Judy Henske. Croz actually sounds pretty good here despite his health problems at the time.
