A Tranquil Olympics

by Tom King

Despite the problems with the hotels and the plumbing and the warm temperatures I would think that most observers are declaring the two week stop in Sochi a success. If you remember a few weeks ago the the thought was that the games would be disrupted in some way by a terrorist attack. That we would be faced with filmed carnage of bombs going off in the Olympic Village. That didnt happen. Whether it was because of Putin's Ring Of Steel around the games or the fact that the Chechen nationalists are not capable of mounting such an attack is unknown. All we do know is that the Games went on and delivered thrilling performances and made some new stars. It also delivered crushing disappointments for Team USA on the hockey rinks and at the ice skating arena. For those who are able...they will begin preparing for the next Games in South Korea within a few weeks. For those who are done...Bode Miller among them...they will look back at their Olympic memories and I would imagine that most of them...win or lose...would say that all the pain, sweat and effort that went into it was worth it...and that's what makes them different than you and me.

The Badger mens basketball team is rolling. A tough road win at Iowa has set them up nicely for the stretch run. They beat five very good opponents in a row and now face a much easier schedule the rest of the way. With their RPI and a chance to win out starting tomorrow night at home with Indiana, they are a very possible #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The run in the Big Ten Tournament will tell that tale.

The pairings are out for the high school girls basketball tournament which begins next week. You can see the pairings in the sports section of our website but one of the more interesting first round matchups feature Wausau West at DC Everest. The Evergreens won both regular season matchups but West is a very good team with a transcendent player in Jasmin Samz and this will be no gimme for DCE.

I'll be in Tomahawk tonight for girls regular season hoops as both Wausau East and Tomahawk will be looking for their first win of the season. Pre game at 715 on Foxsports Radio AM1390 & FM 93.9.

Happy Birthday To Abe Vigoda who is 93 today...which leads to this famous Barney Miller scene.

Songs of The Day  (from my I-pod)

Mohammeds Radio-Warren Zevon (1976) if you don't have the first Warren Zevon album in your collection you need to fix that right away. Just a great collection of songs and this live version from the British TV show "Old Grey Whistle Test' is excellent.

Mojo Hand-Lightnin Hopkins (1962) a blues original...man this is good stuff
