Here Comes The Season

by Tom King

The snow is gone...the rains have held off and we will have high school baseball today. Last season we didnt have a game until May so we are already ahead of last year. Wausau East and Wausau West will square off today at West and I will have the game live as the first half of our doubleheader on Foxsports Radio AM1390 & FM 93.9...that will be followed by DC Everest at Stevens Point. East is 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the Valley and will be trying to bounce back from a sweep at the hands of Marshfield on Saturday. West hasnt played for quite awhile after being shut out by Stevens Point in their first game 5-0. It looks like SPASH will be the team to beat in the Valley this year...loaded with pitching although they split a doubleheader this past weekend at Green Bay Preble. And remember, you can always find the podcasts of the games at either Foxsportswausau.com or wsau.com...check out our new everything lumberjacks and everything evergreens pages which have game stories, photos and the podcasts. And if youre at a game you can post your pictures on everythinglumberjacks and everythingevergreens by using the hashtag #@wausaueast or #@dceverest.

Marshfield coach Mark Zee and East coach Steve Heinrich were discussing an idea on Saturday that seems like a winner. They were playing at the fabulous Woodside Sports Complex in Mauston and thought why not have all of the Valley teams head down there on a Saturday in mid April and play doubleheaders against different teams. The complex is set up perfectly for something like that and the chances of the field being playable is much greater down there than up here. Have a Valley Opening Day with all of the teams in the same place. Seems like a winning idea and I hope the coaches and ad's can make this happen.

The East-West game today serves two purposes for me...not only broadcasting but scouting for the Legion team as well. The roster for this season is almost set although I do have a few spots that I should be able to fill after today. I've been watching the teams practice and you can tell some things but seeing them in game action usually tells the tale if they are ready for the competition at the Legion level. Our season begins on June 13th.

The Brewers did it again. they ran their MLB best record to 15-5 with a 4-3 win over the Padres in the opener of a three game series at Miller Park. Wily Peralta is 3-0 after pitching 6 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on six hits. Carlos Gomez was in the lineup although his suspension should be announced today for his role in Sunday's brawl in Pittsburgh. Aramis Ramirez had a hiome run and Ryan Braun drove in two.

Songs of The Day (from my I-pod) a couple of early 60's pop classics

My Boy Lollipop-Millie Small (1964) the song that made Island Records...selling over 6 million copies for the Jamacian teen and introduced ska music to America

My Boyfriends Back-Angels (1963) a number 1 hit for the girls group that actually sang it as a demo for the Shirelles but the record label decided to release it as it was.
