The Packers kept their playoff hopes alive with a 22-21 win over Atlanta on Sunday and they did it after a first half that left them reeling and the fans booing. The Falcons didnt score in the 2nd half as the Packers forced two turnovers and gave up only 136 yards. And two of the biggest plays were made by....Jarret Bush. Yes that Jarret Bush...they guy who usually only plays when things are desperate and then usually gives up a big play or makes a mistake that enrages Packer Nation. And he wasnt alone...big plays by Johnny Jolly & Mike Neal & Micah Hyde and on & on. The Packers O did enough on a frigid day at Lambeau...but it was the defense that won this one and kept Green Bay right on the heels of the Lions & Bears. This race is far from over.
The weather and officiating were brutal in various parts of the country on Sunday. Would it be too much to ask to have a blizzard like the one in Philly yesterday when the Super Bowl is played in the Meadowlands? Who wouldnt watch that? And congrats to Denver kicker Matt Prater who set a new NFL record with a 64 yard field goal.
It must be tough to find good football officials these days...or a multi-billion dollar league like the NFL wouldnt keep running some of these guys out there every week. When calls are being blown on an almost weekly basis that play big roles in the outcome of games...these guys need to be held accountable. Players get cut and coaches get fired when they screw up enough times. Some of these guys need to be gone.
The Badger football team found out yesterday that even with three losses they will get a very nice Bowl trip. Wisconsin will face South Carolina in the Capital One Bowl in Orlando on News Year Day. This bowl is considered the top non-BCS bowl and the two teams will face off for the first time. The Gamecocks are 10-2 and won their final five games of the season. They beat Nebraska in this game in 2012.
The Badger basketball team kept it rolling on Saturday with an impressive win over Marquette. They put their 10-0 mark on the line Wednesday night hosting UW-Milwaukee. Wisconsin has three games remaining before they begin Big Ten play and should be heavily favored in all of them.
It's a big week of high school hockey this week. Wisconsin Valley play continues on Tuesday and then the Marathon Cup returns to Greenheck Fieldhouse on Thursday and Saturday. I'll be broadcasting all four games on Foxsports Radio AM 1390 & FM 93.9 beginning at 5 each night.
Wausau East and DC Everest will also square off in a girls and boys basketball doubleheader on Friday night at the East gym.
