One Step Forward...

by Tom King

Ted Thompson has been much maligned for hardly ever being a player in free agency. This year is proving to be a bit different. The signing of Julius Peppers is big...he's no Reggie White...but he certainly is an upgrade to the Packer pass rushing situation and either teamed with Clay Matthews or replacing Matthews production when Clay suffers his inevitable injury seems to be just what the Packers needed.

The team also announced yesterday the signing of Letroy Guion, a 6'4", 303 pounder who started 28 games for the Vikings. The team now has seven DL on the roster which suggests that Jolly, Pickett and Wilson will not be back.

The Packers did lose James Jones yesterday as he signed a three year deal with Oakland but brought back James Starks on a two year deal to back up Eddie Lacy.

So, the team gains Peppers & Guion...brings back Shields, Quarless, Raji, Neal and Starks and loses Dietrich-Smith, MD Jennings and Jones. Seems like a plus free agent season to me.

I filled out my NCAA bracket yesterday and yes I'm a homer. Ive got Wisconsin winning it all over Florida. My Cinderella team is Stephen F. Austin who I have going to the Sweet Sixteen . Let the fun begin.

Congrats to UWSP mens hockey coach Chris Brooks who is a finalist for the D-3 Coach of The Year Award. The Pointers are playing in the D-3 Frozen Four later this week. They face Oswego State Friday night in Lewiston Maine in the same building where Cassius Clay knocked out Sonny Liston. Remember when championship fights were held in places like Lewiston Maine?

Songs Of The Day (from my I-pod)

More & More-Blood,Sweat & Tears (1968) the album this kick-ass tune came from went to #1 and won the Grammy for album of the year in 1969.

Moonshiner-Alison Moorer  (2001) from the soundtrack of the movie "Songcatcher"...a song tradtionally sung by a man..just a haunting tune that will stay with you for awhile.
