Pointer Success Keeps Rolling

by Tom King

After an excellent winter season for UWSP sports the school keeps stacking success in the spring. Pat Bloom's baseball team has started the season 12-1 including a doubleheader sweep of Oshkosh to start the WIAC season yesterday. The Pointers are ranked #2 in the country in D-3 and it starts with a dominating pitching staff. JP Feyereisen and Cam Seidl are former WIAC Pitchers of the Year and shut down the Titans yesterday. Max Frederick and Luke Watson have also been dominant and pitched shut-outs on the spring trip to Florida. The offense is led by Rosholt grad Kyle McHugh who had three doubles and 4 rbis in one of the wins yesterday and hit .429 on the spring trip. The team hit .348 in Florida and averaged 8.7 runs per game. They are scheduled to host La Crosse on Saturday.

They played yesterdays games on an artificial turf field in Mauston. It looks like that city put up a baseball-softball complex for tournaments and the colleges and high schools in the state may have to use it as the weather doesnt appear to be cooperating..

No Masters for Tiger Woods. He had back/neck micro-surgery on Monday and is hoping to be able to play sometime this summer. I blogged about this earlier and it appears his chase for the Jack Nicklaus record for major wins is pretty problematic right now.

Day baseball for the Brewers today as they try to win the first series of the year. They have split the first two with the Braves as Atlanta used the long-ball to win yesterday. Carlos Gomez led off the game with a long home run for Milwaukee.

Three new tribute records hit stores on Tuesday. The two-disc tribute to Jackson Browne "Looking Into You" includes 23 tracks with a variety of artists giving their own takes on Browne songs. Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley and Bonnie Raitt are just a few. "This Is Your Life" is a Ronnie James Dio tribute disc to one of the greatest rock vocalists ever. Sales will benefit the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund. And finally, the Charlie Daniels Band is taking on the Bob Dylan songbook with a disc called "Off The Grid: Doin It Dylan which will include the band's takes on songs like Tangled Up In Blue, Mr. Tambourine Man and The Times They Are A Changin.

Songs Of The Day (from my I-pod)

Movin On-Bad Company (1974) one of the great R&R outfits of the 70's featuring the smokin vocals of Paul Rodgers

Movin Out(Anthony's Song)-Billy Joel (1977) Joel's look at the NY folks who fight the rat race every day to "make" it. Although "making it" is a pretty subjective term. A solid track from his breakout album "The Stranger"
