That's Why They Play The Games

by Tom King

The internet is filled with pundits....you know, the experts who try and predict everything...from the winner of every sporting event...to what order players will be drafted...to what plot twists all of your favorite tv shows  will take. The net...along with all related social media....is a giant maw that demands content to swallow even if that content is puerile and snarky. That's why I love a day like Saturday...when all of the experts can look back at what was predicted and see what a sham the whole enterprise is. No one expected Penn State to come in and beat the Badgers and ruin their BCS hopes, but that's what happened....No one expected Michigan to have a chance to beat Ohio State and when they did, few outside of coach Brady Hoke expected them to try a two point conversion for the win instead of taking their chances in overtime....no one expected Missouri to make it to the SEC Championship game and how about Duke making it to the ACC title game?? Yeah that's Duke football...playing for a conference championship game. And then there was the end of the Iron Bowl.....you can watch football for the next 50 years and probably not see another ending like Auburn's win over Alabama. And the operative word there is 'probably"...because as much as we like to think we know what's going on and what should happen....they play the games for a reason...because "anything" can happen...and who would want it any other way.

The Bucks finally end their long losing streak with a solid home win over Boston. Big minutes and success for #1 pick Giannis Antetakoumpo and even Bucks announcer Ted Davis is tweeting that the Greek Freak has to play more. I'm still convinced that this Bucks team is not as bad as their record shows and if they can get and stay a bit healthier they will be able to show it.

With the Badger football team awaiting their Bowl assignment...we can concentrate a bit on the high-flying Badger hoops squad. They are a top 10 team and are playing like it...unbeaten and fun to watch as they play a bit more uptempo game than we are used to under Bo Ryan. They face Tony Bennett's Virginia squad on Wednesday night in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge.

Attended the funeral of an old friend on Sunday. Bill Berger and I spent four months together in college as part of a semester abroad program through UWSP . And even though four months doesnt seem like alot of time it went along way toward molding me. And Bill was a big part of that. He was older than me but that didnt matter on this trip....we were all Americans, most of us seeing these countries for the first time. He was a funny guy and passed away too soon at the age of 61 doing what he loved...deer hunting on the opening morning of the season on family land near Cambria. RIP .

The high scool winter season is heating up and I'll have three broadcasts this week on Foxsports Radio AM1390 & FM 93.9. We will take a look at the Wausau East girls basketball team Tuesday night as they face powerful Wittenberg-Birnamwood as the second half of our DH. On Thursday I will head to Eau Claire as the East hockey team looks to build on their big comeback win in their opener with a game vs Altoona. it will also be game 2 of our DH that night. Then the Valley boys basketball season opens on Friday night and I will be live with the Lumberjacks as they take on SPASH. The Panthers should be one of the favorites for the Valley Conf crown this year and it's an early challenge for the 2-1 Lumberjacks. If you cant catch the games live...they are always saved as podcasts on foxsportswausau.com & wsau.com.

Songs of the Day   (from my I-pod)

Midnight Rambler-Rolling Stones (1969) a great Jagger/Richard song from "Let It Bleed" although you may be familiar with the live version from Hot Rocks that features Mick Taylor on guitar after Brian Jones had died. the song is purportedly about Albert DiSalvo, The Boston Strangler.

Midnight Rider-Gregg Allman(1973) from his solo Lp 'Laid Back" comes this reworked version of a song he did earlier with the band. I like this version better.
