After Tiger Woods coughed up a two-stroke lead by hitting his tee shot in the water in the middle of the back nine yesterday at The Players Championship it appeared that he was once again going to meltdown, betrayed by his driver and let a victory slip away. The man, who once was unflappable with a final round lead, was giving the other players who were now tied with him, hope. There was the flighty Sergio Garcia (who had a few words back & forth with Woods after a 3rd round kerfluffle with some crowd noise...there were youngsters Kevin Streelman and David Lingmerth, who you just kept thinking would falter but hung in there making shot after shot...and there was wizened veteran Jeff Maggert, who at 48, was looking for a blast at mattering again on a Sunday. But Maggert, found the water on the island hole at 17...Garcia incredibly found water on 17 & 18...and the youngsters faltered as well. Woods made 2 pars on the tough finishing holes for a two stroke win. If you saw the look on his face down the stretch...it was a look that said "enough". Enough giving tournaments away on Sunday...enough letting an occasiaonal bad drive ruin his round. Enough giving lesser players the feeling that he is beatable in the last few holes of a tournament. He is a ripped and focused player now...with his off-course life apparantly placid (thanks Lindsay)...Woods appears ready to enter the summer locked & loaded. The US Open and The British Open beckon...I wouldnt bet against him.
The Brewers are anything but locked & loaded. They were swept again by a division opponent over the weekend. The pitching and defense have gone south together. The only positive is that it's not Memorial Day yet and there is still time to recover. They have had alot of success against the Pirates lately and hope that continues this week starting tonight.
Congrats to the Pointer baseball team who held off the upstart Eagles from LaCrosse to win the WIAC baseball conference tournament. They get an automatic bid to the NCAA D-3 Tournament that begins on Wednesday. Details will come out today about place and opponent.
I'll have high school baseball tonight as the Wausau East Lumberjacks will travel to Wisconsin Rapids for a makeup game at Witter Field. Pre-game at 4:45 on Foxsports AM1390 & FM 93.9.
