MIAMI (Reuters) - The Tampa Bay Rays rallied in the eighth inning to beat the Boston Red Sox 8-5 Wednesday and gain some ground in the American League Wild Card race.
With the score tied at 5-5, Pat Burrell's RBI single put the Rays ahead before Evan Longoria hit a two-run blast to left field to cap the win.
The victory moved the Rays (72-60) back within five games of the Red Sox in the standings. Reliever J.P. Howell (7-4) was credited with the win while Dan Wheeler came on to record the final two outs of the game.
The Red Sox (77-55) claimed the opener of the three-game series 8-4 Tuesday. The rubber match will be played on Thursday.
