WAUSAU, Wis (WSAU) A state appeals court says a Green Bay man convicted of an attempted murder 15 years ago should get a new trial. The Third District Appellate Court in Wausau said Cody Vandenberg’s co-defendant has since confessed to the incident. And therefore, the court said it was in the interest of justice to throw out Vandenberg’s previous conviction and let him have a new trial.
He was sentenced to 80 years in prison for the stabbing and robbery of Blake Renard at the victim’s mobile home in 1995 in the Green Bay suburb of Bellevue. But the appeals court said the jury never heard testimony about Renard’s inability to identify and describe the attacker.
