Western Michigan held on for a 71-to-69 win over Detroit Mercy last night at University Arena in Kalamazoo. The Broncos had a nine point lead over the visiting Titans with 6-and-a-half minutes remaining in the game but Detroit forced a tie at 66 with just over 2 minutes left.
Western Michigan then scored the next five points and used a block and a steal in the closing seconds to nail down the victory. Five Broncos scored in double figures led by Mike Douglas and Nate Hutcheson with 14 points apiece. Freshman Ray McCallum had a game-high 19 points for the Titans, who slip to 5-and-5.
Western Michigan, which improved to 3-and-4, returns to action Saturday night in Atlanta against Georgia State.
