$250K Bond Set for Iowa Co. Man Accused of Fatal Shooting

by

IOWA COUNTY, Wis. (WTAQ) - Bond was set at a quarter-million dollars Monday for a rural Iowa County man accused of shooting another man to death.

His attorney said 36-year-old Andrew Neevel acted in self-defense when 38-year-old Jeffrey McPhail of Rewey was shot during an argument on Sunday night. It happened outside Neevel’s home about 15 miles southwest of Dodgeville.

Iowa County prosecutors expect to file charges by Friday, and Neevel is due back in court July 27th.

Officials said McPhail went to Neevel’s home with a woman who was planning to see her sister, who reportedly had a baby with Neevel in January. The sister was not home at home at the time. It’s not known what caused the argument between the two men.

Sheriff Steve Michel said it resulted from past contacts, and alcohol could have been a factor. He would not classify it as a lover’s quarrel. His officers are still investigating. Neevel called authorities after the shooting and turned himself in.
