CRANDON, Wis (WSAU) A judge ruled that the survivors of the 2007 Crandon shootings must pay the city and county's court costs after an unsuccessful lawsuit. Crandon and Forest County spent $21,000 defending themselves from a wrongful death lawsuit.

The families of four victims had sued the city of Crandon and Forest County following the October 2007 shooting by Tyler Peterson. He worked part time for the Crandon police officer and full-time as a Forest County sheriff's deputy.

The families claimed his bosses should have realied that Peterson was mentally instable. They lost the lawsuit after a judge ruled that the police departments followed proper hiring procedures, and that Peterson met law enforcement standards when he was hired.

Peterson went on a shooting rampage in October, 2007 when he was shunned by a former girlfriend. He killed himself after getting into a shootout with police sharpshooters.
