Supporters of high-speed rail hold "save the train" rally

by

MILWAUKEE (WSAU) A rally will be held in Milwaukee today to try and get Governor-elect Scott Walker to do a flip-flop on high-speed rail. The Wisconsin State A-F-L C-I-O and other groups that support the Milwaukee-to-Madison train will rally at noon at Talgo – the company from Spain that was brought to Milwaukee to make two trains for the Wisconsin project. They’re working on other trains now, but the company has said it might move in 2012 to a state where high-speed rail is still in the cards. But Walker doesn’t buy that – and he doesn’t believe Washington would give the $810-million stimulus dollars for the train to another state.

Walker wants to keep the money to fix roads. But the A-F-L C-I-O and other train supporters say Walker’s opposition to the project would cost jobs, hurt the state’s economic recovery, and threaten the future of the Talgo plant in Milwaukee.
