MERRILL, Wis. (WSAU) – A Merrill man accused of breaking into the Pine River fire station and stealing property will not get an attorney from the state.

A judge ruled that Michael Baumann did not meet the conditions and requirements for indigence. That means he won’t be assigned a county-paid attorney.

Lincoln County deputies say Baumann and two teenagers from Wausau broke into the fire station last month. They stole cash, a radio head set, GPS units and a digital video camera, and a first responder bag full of equipment. Baumann admitted to deputies that he was in the building after he was presented footage from security cameras, but denied any knowledge of the thefts.

The teens were contacted at their residences in Wausau and most of the stolen items have been recovered. Baumann had been a volunteer for the fire department.

He’ll be back in court September 9th for a scheduling conference.
