NEW YORK (Reuters) - Washington Nationals outfielder Nyjer Morgan has been handed an eight-game ban and an undisclosed fine by Major League Baseball after a series of incidents, including a brawl in Wednesday's game at the Florida Marlins.
Marlins pitcher Chris Volstad received a six-game ban and a fine for his role in a clash with Morgan and others during the fracas, MLB said Friday in a release.
The league ruled that Volstad had intentionally thrown the ball at Morgan on two occasions and that he was involved in fighting after players left the benches and clashed.
Morgan already has a seven-game suspension, relating to an earlier game, under appeal with the league.
In receiving his eight-game ban, the 30-year-old Morgan was also cited for "unnecessarily" running into St. Louis Cardinals catcher Bryan Anderson on August 28 and directing "inappropriate comments" toward Marlins fans on Tuesday.
In other punishments related to Wednesday's brawl, Marlins pitcher Alex Sanabia received a five-game ban, first baseman Gaby Sanchez will sit out three games while pitcher Jose Veras has been fined.
Nationals pitcher Doug Slaten received a three-game suspension for intentionally throwing a pitch at Sanchez in the bottom of the seventh after a warning had been issued the previous inning.
