GREEN BAY (WSAU) In the wake of the lockout, the Green Bay Packers are scrambling to build up their roster before training camp begins this weekend. N-F-L teams were allowed to start signing contracts for draft picks and first-year free agents at nine this morning. And by 10:15, around a dozen players reportedly signed deals with Green Bay. The team normally announces all their undrafted free agents at once – but the players, their agents, and others are spreading the news. Among the Packers’ first pick-ups was wide receiver Tori Gurley of South Carolina, who had the longest arms of any receiver at the N-F-L Scouting Combine in February. Also signing was Delaware safety Anthony Bratton, who had two interceptions in college last fall. Utah receiver Shaky Smithson tweeted that he signed with Green Bay this morning. And Ohio State running Brandon Saine joined the Pack as well. Other reported Packer signings include Arizona State receiver Kerry Taylor, Middle Tennessee State linebacker Jamari Lattimore, South Florida center Sampson Genus, quarterback Diondre Borel of Utah State, offensive linemen Ray Dominguez of Arkansas and Theo Sherman of James Madison, safety M-D Jennings of Arkansas State, and defensive Vic So’oto of Brigham Young.
Several Wisconsin Badgers have also signed free-agent contracts this morning. The reported list includes running back John Clay and defensive back Niles Brinkley, both of whom signed with Pittsburgh. Receiver and kick returner David Gilreath said yesterday he would sign with Indianapolis. And reports have linked Badger quarterback Scott Tolzien to the Colts as well. There are also reports that former UWSP reciever Jared Jenkins has signed with Detroit.
