STEVENS POINT, Wis (WSAU) Teachers in the Stevens Point school district were picketing yesterday because they haven't reached a contract agreement with their school board. There were closed-session negotiations earlier this week. Teachers there are hoping to work out a contract extension before the collective bargaining rules change on March 25th.
The Merrill and Wausau school districts have reached contract extensions.
Stevens Point superintendent Attila Weninger says there were talks with union leaders, but never formal negotiations. He also says those discussions have ended.
During the school board meeting it was announced that two teachers would be laid off. Another 50 are planning to retire at the end of the school year.
The school district will have to cut $3-million from its next budget. And without changes in insurance, health care costs will rise by another $1-million.
