BELOIT, WI (WATQ) - A man killed in a shooting incident that involved a police officer near Beloit was identified Monday as 26-year-old Darryl Cooper of Rockford Illinois. The state Justice Department is still investigating the incident, which happened early Sunday morning at Rex Lanes in the Rock County town of Beloit. State and local investigators say town police Sergeant Richard Felger drove into the lot when the bar closed, as a normal part of his beat. He heard gunfire as he walked through the parking lot, and he confronted Cooper because he was armed. Officials said the man shot at Felger first, and wounded him in a leg. Felger then returned fire and incapacitated the suspect. Both men were taken to a Beloit hospital, where Cooper died and officer Felger underwent surgery. He’s an eight-year veteran of the Beloit Town Police. The number of people who fired shots, and the total number of shots fired, remain under investigation. Rock County officers are asking the public for information.
