APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - The parents of a 17-month-old girl in Appleton have been freed on signature bonds, after being accused of starving the child for fear she’d become obese. 35-year-old Christopher Sultze and his 36-year-old wife Mary are both charged in Outagamie County with felony child neglect. Prosecutors said the baby weighed eight pounds when she was born in July of last year – and 13 months later, she had only gained three pounds. Authorities said a social worker told Christopher Sultze to feed the child more – but he reportedly said he didn’t want obese children. Mary Sultze’s attorney is not convinced that the parents committed a crime. She waived a preliminary hearing, and was ordered to stand trial. She’s scheduled to enter a plea at her next court appearance, but a date has not been set. Christopher Sultze had a preliminary hearing begin today, but it didn’t finish. The state asked for a delay until next Wednesday.
