Pair of Democrats introduce workplace bullying bill

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Bullying does not end in school. That’s according to two Wisconsin Democrats who have introduced a bill to prohibit bullying in the workplace. Madison Representative Kelda Helen Roys and Milwaukee Senator Spencer Coggs have proposed what’s called the “Healthy Workplace Bill.” It would grant limited legal protections to workers who can prove physical or mental harm from an abusive workplace environment. According to the Workplace Bullying Institute’s Web site, lawmakers in 21 states have introduced the measure since 2003 – but none have passed it. It was pending in 11 states as of five months ago. The group said workplace bullying was defined two ways in recent surveys. It’s been defined as “repeated, health-harming abusive conduct committed by bosses and co-workers.” In the other survey, bullying on the job was defined as “repeated mistreatment, sabotage by others that prevented work from getting done, verbal abuse, threatening conduct, intimidation, and humiliation.” Roys cited a Zogby survey listed by the institute which said over a third of U-S employees have been bullied, mostly by bosses of the same gender. Roys says there have been cases that led to murder-and-suicide, but only three-percent of victims have ever filed lawsuits. Roys said she introduced the bill at the start of “Freedom from Workplace Bullies Week.”
