STEVENS POINT, Wis (WSAU) Stevens Point mayor Andrew Halverson proposes eliminating the city assessors office to help close a budget gap.
Tax assessments would be handled by a private contractor. Any tax challenges would still be handled by the city's board of review. The city council would have to approve the change.
The change would eliminate four city jobs.
Outsourcing the work would cost between $80,000 and $90,000 a year. The city would save about a quarter-million dollars. The budget shortfall is estimated at $1.4-million.
