'Grey's Anatomy' Recap: A Lion Takes Its Toll on Seattle Grace

S8E18: Welcome back, Grey's Anatomy fans, for another night of hospital tomfoolery consisting of lions and doctors and surgeries — oh my! But if you're hoping for some answers to a few unresolved plot points, well, then you'll be sorely disappointed. ""The Lion Sleeps Tonight"" deals with Teddy actually attempting to cope with Henry's death like a normal person; Alex distancing himself from intern Morgan who's experiencing some co-dependency issues; and Cristina absolving to deal with Owen's one night stand in the best way she knows how: the classic silent treatment.

All-in-all, it's just your typical day at Seattle Grace (well, except for the whole lion part), and it's starting to get pretty frustrating. Sure, there are heart-warming moments that have you reaching for the tissue box, but these story lines are equivalent to running on a treadmill: using up energy, but going absolutely nowhere.

""We are going to save that crazy lady's life just so I can tell her she's crazy."" - Bailey

A woman and her boyfriend are brutally mauled by a lion she's been keeping as a house pet. Rightfully, everyone at the hospital thinks that she's completely crazy, which seems highly probable. However, they both survive the incident, which is more than can be said for Cristina and Owen's relationship. Now that the truth of Owen's infidelity has been laid out on the table, Cristina hasn't said one word to her husband/boss for over a week. Desperate for some help, Owen turns to Meredith for some answers, but soon discovers that Cristina hadn't confided in her about his cheating ways, which could mean she's eventually going to forgive him. But now that Meredith knows, she too is giving Owen the cold shoulder and telling him to figure it out on his own. Clearly these people have forgotten this is the man who signs their checks every week — they may want to tread lightly.

This has the potential to be a pivotal plot point, but it's not going anywhere. Every week we see the same awkward interaction between these Cristina and Owen, but nothing progresses to the next level. Either they're going to work it out or fall apart, but it's time to pick a side and stick with it. Let's have all these pent up emotions finally boil over (and throwing cereal at someone doesn't count).

""Make sure you want him back because you want him, not because he's with somebody else."" - Derek

Then there's the possible relationships that could have been. Lexie overhears Mark talking about moving in his his eye surgeon girlfriend Julia, which sends Lexie into a fit of hysterics, fretting about whether she should tell Mark she's still in love with him. But even after Derek's suggestion of simply telling him how she feels (and my incessant annoyed screams at the television), she still didn't tell McSteamy the truth. Viewers have been pleading for these two to get back together. I'm all for the slow burn, but give it up already — it's time these two hit the on-call room, stat!

Meanwhile, Alex attempts to severe the ties with intern Morgan, who has become much too dependent on him these days — the number of texts he receives from her in a day officially make her stalker material. But it's hard to blame her since Alex is pretty hot and she's facing one of the biggest decisions a mother ever has to make: whether she lets her preemie baby go through countless more surgeries or decides to end his suffering. She eventually ends up choosing to continue with the surgeries, but it looks like her (lack of a) relationship with Alex is null and void at this point. And we had such high hopes for that one.

And don't even get me started on the storyline about Callie getting jealous about Arizona's past lovers who work in the hospital. It was just so pointless and let's be honest, everyone in Seattle Grace dates everyone else, so she really shouldn't be all that surprised.

""I am a widow."" - Teddy

The best part of the episode deserves to be saved for last. Teddy is trying her best to focus on her work and her whole making-hearts-from-scratch stem cell research project, but she's still having a hard time accepting Henry's death. She even attempts to go to a meeting for widows and actually ends up lecturing all of them, so yeah, it didn't go very well. Later that day, she is assigned to an elderly man who suffered a heart attack after seeing the lion roaming around the streets of Seattle (apparently once it was done feasting on its owner, it took to the streets for freedom). The guy is understandably skiddish, but he's about to go on a cruise with his wife for their anniversary and is scared he's ruined their vacation. But thanks to Teddy's impeccable skills, she manages to completely restore his heart that very same day. However, when she goes to inform the man's wife of the good news, Teddy discovers that she's died right in the waiting room. It's a cruel twist of irony since the husband was the one we were more concerned about, and having to watch Teddy inform him that his wife was gone was almost unbearable. It did, however, allow Teddy to see herself in the poor man's eyes and finally come to terms with the fact that her spouse is gone as well.

Grey's is certainly capable of raising the emotional bar to unprecedented levels, but this talent is only being used for fleeting storylines. This show used to get so much more accomplished in a 60-minute time slot, but now it's moving slower than a daytime soap opera (and believe me, that's slow). I used to love Grey's, but if it doesn't get its fast-paced rhythm back it could end up losing a majority of its fan base.
