State GOP Senate leader wants to name political appointees to GAB

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - The Republican leader of the Wisconsin Senate says he’ll try to convince his colleagues next year to name political appointees to the panel that investigates corruption and runs elections.

GOP lawmakers have been saying ever since the recall contests that the Government Accountability Board favors Democrats. And Scott Fitzgerald says he’ll try to do something about it in the next session.

Lawmakers of both parties hailed the creation of the Accountability Board in 2008 – saying it would prevent corruption after 5 ex-lawmakers and an aide were convicted of illegally running tax-funded party campaign machines from the Capitol.

But Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald says the 6 retired judges on the panel became a, “rubber stamp” in adopting recommendations by its staff which he says favored Democrats.

Fitzgerald said that putting political appointees on the board would, “strike more of a balance.”

The former state Elections and Ethics board had political appointees before they were scrapped in favor of the accountability agency.
