HAZELHURST, Wis. (WSAU) - Despite strong numbers in this year's deer hunt, a Northwoods lawmaker is calling for more support from the DNR.
Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-Hazelhurst) says the overall increase in the deer harvest is not reflected in the Northwoods. “It is encouraging to see the preliminary statewide numbers. However, we continue to see low harvest totals in many Northwoods units." The overall harvest was up 7.7%, but many hunters in the northern units were not able to get antlerless tags. Overall deer tag sales were also up 2% from last year.
Tiffany says that lack of confidence in the harvest will lead to lower tourism numbers for the gun season. Tiffany is calling on the DNR to start implementing the Kroll Report which calls for an increase in communication with hunters as well as changes in forestry management.
