STAR PRAIRIE, WI (WSAU) - More details are known about the 4-year-old child that died in northwestern Wisconsin Tuesday. St. Croix County Sheriff John Shilts says Collin Fitzgerald died when he wandered away from a snow fort in the family’s front yard. He says Collin’s father was plowing snow from the driveway. "He had pulled partially into the garage to backblade the snow out from in front of the garage doors, and for whatever reason, Collin made his way back onto the driveway. Dad didn't notice Collin and backed up, and unfortunately backed over him with the pickup truck."
Shiltz says the child suffered traumatic injuries when he was run over, and there was little emergency crews could do for him. The Sheriff says this is a sad reminder that we can’t take our eyes off small children. "Kids will be kids, and although we think they're in one spot and we may caution them to stay there while we're plowing or shoveling, kids will be kids and sometimes they forget and sometimes they end up in places where we don't think they're going to be. We've got to be ever mindful of where they're at and what they're doing."
Shiltz says Collin’s death has been tough on the family and the emergency crews that responded to the scene. He says, "I can't even imagine having to deal with a tragic event such as this as a parent. It's hard enough for all of the emergency support staff" and adds, "Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they try to work through the loss."
Collin Fitzgerald’s funeral service will be this Saturday, December 15th at 11 a.m. at Faith Community Church in New Richmond.
