MADISON, WI (WSAU) Five Wisconsin football assistants have accepted new jobs elsewhere. Linebackers’ coach Andy Buh is the latest. It was reported yesterday that he’ll become the new defensive coordinator at California under new Golden Bears’ coach Sonny Dykes.
Athletic director Barry Alvarez said he would have liked all of Bret Bielema’s former assistants to stay. Alvarez confirmed weekend reports on the Internet that he thought about staying on as the head coach in 2013, in order to keep the assistants from bolting. But he said the same thing would have happened at this time next year – so he decided against it.
Alvarez says he doesn’t like the fact that some schools are pressuring the Badger assistants to take new jobs, giving them just 24 hours to decide in some cases. He says he doesn’t operate that way. But with the head coaching situation in doubt, Alvarez says he can’t blame the assistants for protecting themselves and their families.
Alvarez also denied speculation that he’s having trouble finding a good head coaching candidate. He says he’s being patient, and he knows he’ll hire somebody good.
The other assistants moving on are offensive coordinator Matt Canada, defensive coordinator Chris Ash, defensive line coach Charlie Partridge, and receivers coach Zach Azzanni.
