State officials warn of robocall scams targeting seniors

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) - A group of scammers has been using robocalls to target Wisconsin seniors.

The calls claim to be from companies called “Senior Emergency Care,” “Senior Safety Alert” and “Senior Safe Alert”. Officials with the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) say the best course of action is to simply hang up. Administrator Sandy Chalmers says no one using a robocall to sell you something is being honest about it. "Really, someone who's not willing to talk to you is just sending up a red flag."

Chalmers says the groups have not registered with the state and are calling numbers that are on the Do Not Call List. You might the numbers on caller ID units as having a 262 or 608 area code, but the numbers might be spoofed or misrepresented.

A statement from DATCP says the groups may be trying to sell a questionable product that is tied to a recurring fee. The calls and responses from the scammers is following a pattern of other calls targeting seniors around the country. Your best defense is to simply hang up the phone.
