WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WSAU) Wisconsin Rapids firefighters were involved in rescuing a deer that had was trapped the ice on the Wisconsin River. It happened Saturday afternoon near the NewPage rail bridge. Firefighters say a doe was stuck on the ice about 200-yards from shore. A DNR warden assisted.
Firefighters used a small boat and their ice rescue suits to break up the ice around the deer. It was about 2-inches thick in the area. Once there was enough open water, the deer swam to shore and was eventually pushed up the riverbank and onto dry land by a firefighter.
The animal ran off on its own and was unharmed.
