Katy Perry is a huge fan of the legendary rock band Queen ; one year, she dressed up as their late frontman Freddie Mercury at her birthday party, and she has spoken about how listening to the group's music made her want to become a singer. Now, she's paid tribute to them at a London concert, and reportedly wants a part in an upcoming Mercury biopic.
Performing a headlining set at the star-studded Capital FM Summertime Ball 2012 concert in London on Saturday night, Katy rocked the crowd with hits like "Teenage Dream," "The One That Got Away," "Part of Me" and "Hot 'n Cold," but she closed out her set with a cover of one of Queen's signature classics, the anthemic "We Are the Champions."
Meanwhile, the British tabloid The Mirror reports that Katy wants a role in a movie that's in the works about the life of Freddie Mercury, who died of an AIDS-related illness in 1991, when he was just 45. Sacha Baron Cohen will play Mercury, while Katy, the paper says, is interested in playing Mary Austin , Mercury's one-time girlfriend and lifelong friend, whom he once referred to as his "common-law wife." Mercury, who was bisexual, once said of Austin, "All my lovers asked me why they couldn’t replace Mary, but it’s simply impossible.”
The paper quotes a "friend" of Katy's as saying, "Katy would love to be in the film as she is such a huge fan. She would want to play Mary Austin ideally. Katy has a similar look to Mary and would be a brilliant foil to Sacha.”
