WAUSAU, Wis (Woodchucks-WSAU) The last time these two teams met was late into the month of May for the season opener, and split the two game series at a game apiece. Since then, both teams went in polar opposite directions with the Wisconsin Woodchucks coming in to Thursday night’s game sitting in third place in the Northwoods South, and the Eau Claire Express in dead last with just nine wins on the season. Thursday night however, turned out to be a battle going into the bottom of the ninth until Brendon Hayden, Mr. Clutch sent a fly ball to center deep enough to score the walk off run in a 5-4 Woodchucks victory.
The Express grabbed the early lead when Eau Claire’s right fielder Josh Scheffert doubled to deep center field scoring shortstop Ty Forney in the third inning. The Woodchucks would shut down the rest of the order, however Woodchucks starter Austin Pettibone would receive the earned run, and give up the early 1-0 lead.
The Woodchucks got off to a slow start, unable to put any wood on the ball until third basemen Brendon Hayden slapped a single to left field, to score Brad McKewon to tie the game in the fourth inning.
The Woodchucks earned another run coming off a walk given by pitcher Matt Trowbridge for the Express, giving the Woodchucks the 2-1 lead.
The ‘Chucks were not done there. With two out, Brendon Hayden singled scoring two more insurance runs making it a three run game in the fifth inning.
The lead would be cut in half when Josh Scheffert hit his second double of the game scoring Ty Forney on a groundball to left field.
The Express would tack on another run when Will Fadness grounded out to second, to score Josh Scheffer, but the inning for Austin Pettibone didn’t end there.
Catcher, Alex Real belted a solo home run to left field, erasing the three run lead the ‘Chucks had just a half inning before. After three runs, Pettibone struck out Jimmy Allen to end the side.
The score remained at four a piece until the bottom of the ninth. With two on, and one out, the Woodchucks were looking to end in walk off fashion once again. Brendon Hayden, sent a ball to center, deep enough to score Brooks Braga and for the fourth time this season, the Woodchucks end things in the most exciting fashion in baseball- another walk off.
The Woodchucks will be back in action Friday night to continue their three game series with Eau Claire at 6:35. You can hear the game on Fox Sports 1390.
