Photographer files cease-and-desist with Lassa campaign over altered photos

MARSHFIELD (WSAU) - Hancock photographer Chris Rye has filed a cease and desist order against the Julie Lassa campaign, asking them to stop using his photos.

Rye says that it’s especially unfortunate that the altered pictures were used to obscure the real campaign issues. He says there are three photos in question, and it is especially troubling to him that his own pictures were altered and purposely used to misrepresent Lassa’s opponent, Scott Noble. Lassa and Noble are competing for the 24th District State Senate race.

Rye says that one picture was altered to imply that Noble was denigrating the state’s constitution when he was actually cheerfully celebrating while displaying the signatures he collected to get on the ballot.

State Senate Democratic Committee communications director Brad Wojciechowski said the pictures are public domain since they were posted on Noble’s campaign website. The SSDC posted a press release on Thursday saying that Noble’s own use of the photos should have been reported as an in-kind contribution, and that Noble should be held accountable for not filing proper campaign finance paperwork.

Officials from the SSDC or either candidates' committee could not be reached for comment.
