MARINETTE, WI (WSAU) - Wisconsin shipbuilders have begun construction of a new Navy ship, the USS Detroit. The ceremonial 'keel laying' was last week at Marinette Marine. The Detroit is the fourth Littoral Combat Ship for Marinette Marine. Delivery to the Navy is expected in 2015.
Marinette Marine CEO Chuck Goddard says the 'keel laying' is the beginning of the ship's 'life.' State and Federal officials were on hand for the ceremonies, including Michigan Senator Carl Levin and his wife Barbara. Senator Levin is also chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
Goddard says more than 100 Wisconsin suppliers and over 30 Michigan suppliers will benefit from the construction of the Detroit.
