Veteran's unemployment higher than average but improving

MADISON, WI (WSAU) -  Unemployment is still high, but it’s even higher among certain groups of people. One of those groups is veterans. Dick Vallin is Wisconsin’s State Chairman for Employer’s Support of Guard and Reserve. He says many of our service men and women come back from tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan finding it difficult to enter the workforce.

Vallin says most young veterans joined the military right out of highschool, so many are below average on specific job skills, but way above average with leadership experience.

There are several programs targeted to helping veterans find work after serving their country. Vallin says they are teaming up with the Department of Workforce Development on some employer matchups, and working job fairs as well.

Vallin says employers can not only gain a worker with leadership experience, they also benefit financially under a special program that pays employers half of the veteran's hourly wage.

Vallin says the veterans unemployment rate is still too high, but it has been cut nearly 50% in the past 18 months.

Veterans and employers can find out more about the various programs, including “Hire a Hero” at their websites with these links:
