Argyle brothers to stand trial in triple fatal arson case

LAFAYETTE COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) - Two brothers from Argyle have been ordered to stand trial for the deaths of three children in a house fire they allegedly set.

32-year-old Armin Wand the III and his 18-year-old brother Jeremy both asked that a trial – if one is held – take place outside the Madison media market.

If the case stays in Lafayette County, they said a jury should be brought in from outside the area. Also, both defendants asked for a new judge. Their attorneys didn’t say why. State law allows criminal defendants to request one substitution with no questions asked.

Both Wand brothers waived their rights to preliminary hearings Tuesday morning.

As for the change of venue request, Armin’s lawyer Guy Taylor said some of the intense publicity in the Madison area has, “tainted the jury pool.”

Prosecutors said the Wand brothers set fire to Armin’s house on September 7th so Armin could collect insurance money, and get a fresh start in the wake of marital problems.

Three of Armin Wand’s children were killed in the blaze – Allen, Jeffrey, and Joseph. His wife escaped but was critically injured. Her unborn child died. And the couple’s two-year-old daughter escaped injury.

Armin and Jeremy Wand are scheduled to enter pleas to homicide, attempted homicide, and arson charges after the new judge is named.
