LA CROSSE, WI (WTAQ) - UW-La Crosse is getting some help as it tries to help incoming students who need to be better at math.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has given the school a $50,000 grant to develop an online math course. The goal is to get prospective students up to speed before they arrive on campus to take other classes.
The remedial math course is for high school students to help them get ready for college – and for non-traditional students who need a refresher course.
The UW System says 1 of every 5 incoming freshmen need remedial math training – and the rate is doubled for minority students.
La Crosse Chancellor Joe Gow says the new program will help students take advanced classes sooner than they otherwise would – and it could help them graduate faster.
