Big Ten Adds Maryland and Rutgers

UNDATED (WSAU)   Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany confirmed that the conference will get at least one additional member, starting in 2014. That’s when Maryland is expected to join the Big Ten. Rutgers is expected to make a similar announcement today.

That would give Big Ten 14 schools, including Wisconsin – plus its first presence in the financially-lucrative New York and Washington media markets.

Maryland was a charter member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, which was started in 1953. Today, A-C-C Commissioner John Swofford said Maryland has been an outstanding member of his circuit – and he’s sorry to see them leave. There had been speculation since late last week that Maryland and the Big 10 were talking, and media reports said the discussions got serious on Saturday.

Rutgers is located about 40 miles south of New York City, in the nation’s largest media market. Both schools can expect long-term financial gain, if the recent past is any indication. The Big Ten reportedly gave its schools almost 25-million dollars in shared media rights’ fees this year.

But the A-C-C voted in September to raise its fee to 50-million dollars for leaving the conference, after Notre Dame had moved to depart in some sports. Rutgers would have to pay 10-million to leave the Big East, and perhaps follow a 27-month waiting period unless it can negotiate something sooner.
