MADISON, WI (WSAU) - Two central Wisconsin firefighters have been fined for making illegal political contributions. Stevens Point Lieutenant Tracy Aldrich and Merrill Captain Michael Drury were on the Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin Executive Board. They, along with nine other board members, were fined by the Federal Election Commission a total of $58,000.
The FEC claims the former board members submitted phony reimbursement requests to the labor union for travel and per diem costs for non-existent meetings... and then using that money to cover contributions to the International Association of Firefighters political action fund, which is illegal.
Eleven board members received just over $18,200 in the scam which was paid back.
A Milwaukee Journal Sentinel report claims that Union President and former Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor Mahlon Mitchell cut a check for $58,000 to pay the fines and legal fees for each board member, which means the former board members are not out any money for their actions.
Not all firefighters are respresented by the Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin. this group does represent 57 communities and over 3,000 members.
