STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) - Wisconsin’s First Lady Tonette Walker does a lot of walking, to promote the many places in Wisconsin you can get out and enjoy what nature has to offer.
Tuesday, Walker was joined by Tourism Secretary Stephanie Klatt and about 25 area residents for a tour on part of Stevens Point's Green Circle Trail. Mrs. Walker says the event originally started when her husband, Governor Scott Walker, was Milwaukee County's Executive. "You could walk on your lunch hour for fitness. A friend of mine said you should take that to the whole state, and it worked out perfectly." Now the fun fitness event puts a lot of focus on Wisconsin's scenic places to see on foot.
Tourism Secretary Stephanie Klatt says even in these tough financial times, Wisconsin tourism has made some gains. In Portage County, she says, "A 6.5% increase over the last year. That's huge, and a lot of businesses just aren't seeing that, so that let's you know the power of this (tourism) industry."
Governor Walker is hunting, and the First Lady says she will be traveling to the woods Tuesday as well... to cut a Christmas tree for the Governor's conference room.
