PUERTO VALLERTA, MEX (WSAU) The U-W Milwaukee men lost to Rider 74-to-60 yesterday, in the final game of the Hoops-for-Hope Classic in Puerto Villerta Mexico. The Panthers went down by 12 points at the half, and could not get closer than 10 the rest of the way. Milwaukee was out-shot 45-to-37-percent – and the Panthers only got to the free throw line 15 times, to 37 for Rider.
Anthony Myles scored 14 points for the Broncs, who improved to 4-and-3. Evan Richard had 11 points for Milwaukee, which dropped to 2-and-4. U-W-M will play at Northern Iowa on Saturday.
Angela Rodriguez made four free throws in the final 16 seconds yesterday, to give the U-W Milwaukee women a 68-64 victory over Eastern Kentucky at the San Juan Shootout in Puerto Rico. Eastern Kentucky was up by 10 points early on, but U-W-M caught up with a 19-6 run.
The Lady Colonels had a two-point lead with 1:15 left, but Milwaukee junior Kimee Chandler tied the game before winning it with six free throws at the end. The Panthers turned 22 Eastern Kentucky turnovers into 19 points – and U-W-M took four charges in the second half.
Rodriguez led all scorers with 19. Jade Barber and Jalisa Bryant each scored 15 for Eastern Kentucky. Both teams are now 3-and-2 on the young season. Milwaukee’s next game is on Thursday night at Illinois State. The Wisconsin women shot a season-high 44-percent yesterday, in beating Evansville 73-to-55 in Madison. The Badgers never trailed after Evansville went up 3-to-2 early, and Wisconsin’s lead was 11 at the half.
Morgan Paige led the Badgers with 19 points. Senior Tiera Stephen had a career-high 13 points and a season-high seven assists. Samantha Heck scored a game-high 25 points for Evansville, which dropped to 2-and-3.
Wisconsin is now 3-and-2, and will play at Virginia Tech on Wednesday night in the women’s Big Ten-A-C-C Challenge. The Marquette women lost at Texas A-and-M 84-to-64 at the Aggies’ Thanksgiving Classic. The Golden Eagles went on a 14-to-2 run in the second half to get within 14 – but the Aggies finished the game with a 12-6 run.
Katherine Plouffe led Marquette with 18 points. Kelsey Bone scored 17 for Texas A-and-M, which improved to 3-and-3. Marquette is now 2-and-2, and will play at South Dakota State on Wednesday night.
