Wausau tourism officials not worried about late winter start

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) - Despite the late start to the winter season, officials with the Convention and Visitors Bureau in Wausau aren't worried about an impact to tourism.

Director Darien Schaefer says their usual winter tourism season doesn't really get off the ground until the middle of December. He says locations like the Sylvan Tubing Hill and Nine Mile Forest do need proper snow cover to open, but that the big draw is Granite Peak, which can make its own snow. "And usually they want to be starting that by the middle of November, but they don't see their busy times until December."

Schaefer also points out that snow in Wausau doesn't mean people will be showing up right away. Sometimes tourists need more reminding. "Usually once there's snow on the ground in Northern Illinois is when we see people get winter recreation back in mind."

Warm winters aren't a killer for the local economy either. Schaefer says despite last year's lack of snow, the Metro Area did pretty well. "Our overall hotel performance was up 6.7% from the previous year."
