Wausau budget passes with two cent increase

WAUSAU, WIs. (WSAU) - Wausau city leaders have passed a budget with a small increase in the tax levy.

Wausau's budget was finalized in the last several weeks despite an early start. Mayor Jim Tipple says a recent agreement with city employees over changes to their insurance plans will be saving the city 200-thousand dollars a year. "That was the final hole we were needing to plug in the budget for next year."

Tipple says the efforts of both city staff and the finance committee will mean that overall, Wausau residents will be paying slightly more in property taxes next year. Most Wausau residents will pay less than five more dollars next year to the city. Tipple says Marathon County is staying flat, and the school district's' tax levy will be going down in both Wausau and DC Everest, so residents will see an overall decrease in their tax bill.

The City Council had discussion about adding $25,000 thousand dollars to the budget to be used by the Boys and Girls Club. Some council members expressed they would like to have seen this item earlier in the budget process. The funding request was granted on a 6-to-5 vote.

In the city of Wausau, the tax levy will increase from $8.49 per thousand dollars to $8.51 per thousand dollars, or about $851 dollars on a one hundred thousand dollar home.
